The 7 Types of Rest

As anyone experiencing burnout can tell you, sleep and rest are not always one and the same. ⁠The reason it's not uncommon to wake up after a full 8 hours still feeling exhausted is because sleep is just one of seven types of rest that are crucial for optimal health physically, mentally, and emotionally.⁠ Recognizing which types of rest you need and making time for them can significantly improve your overall wellbeing and quality of life. 

1. PHYSICAL REST

What it is: Physical rest involves giving your body a break from physical activity and exertion.

Signs you’re not getting enough: Feeling tired, achy, sore, and under the weather

How to get more: Get more quality sleep, lay down for nap, take a warm bath, get a massage, spend time in nature

2. MENTAL REST

What it is: Mental rest involves giving your mind a break from cognitive tasks and mental stimulation. 

Signs you’re not getting enough: Feeling foggy, forgetful and frazzled 

How to get more: Schedule short breaks, step outdoors for a moment, make a list, practice mindfulness, listen to calming music, spend time in nature

3. SENSORY REST

What it is: Sensory rest involves reducing exposure to sensory stimuli, such as loud noise, bright lights, and digital screens. 

Signs you’re not getting enough: Feeling overstimulated and overwhelmed

How to get more: Close your eyes for a minute, put your devices on airplane mode, tidy up your space, spend time in nature

4. CREATIVE REST

What it is: Creative rest involves giving your mind a break from brainstorming and problem-solving and reawakening a feeling of awe and wonder.

Signs you’re not getting enough: Feeling bored and uninspired

How to get more: Start a new creative project, go to a museum, make a bouquet of wildflowers, learn watercolor painting, spend time in nature

5. EMOTIONAL REST

What it is: Emotional rest is about taking time to process and release emotions, reducing emotional stress, and creating a sense of emotional balance. 

Signs you’re not getting enough: Feeling undervalued, unappreciated, or unloved 

How to get more: Talk to supportive family or friends, seek professional help, set boundaries, do something that brings you joy, spend time in nature  

6. SOCIAL REST

What it is: Social rest refers to taking time for yourself and having solitude when you need it.

Signs you’re not getting enough: Feeling drained and stretched thin

How to get more: Schedule quality alone time, set boundaries, take a rain check, spend time in nature

7. SPIRITUAL REST

What it is: Spiritual rest is about connecting with your values and beliefs and feeling a deep sense of belonging, love and purpose. 

Signs you’re not getting enough: Feeling lost and adrift 

How to get more: Spend time in prayer and meditation, get involved in your community, read, spend time in nature
